Compounds That Color Fruits and Veggies
May Protect Against Colon Cancer

 

Understanding the molecular structures of compounds that give certain fruits and vegetables their rich colors may help researchers find even more powerful cancer fighters, a new study suggests.

Evidence from laboratory experiments on rats and on human colon cancer cells also suggests that anthocyanins, the compounds that give color to most red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables appreciably slow the growth of colon cancer cells.

Scientist Warn - Dangerous Chemicals Found in Plastics.

An estrogen-like compound widely used in plastic products is thought to be causing serious reproductive disorders, according to a statement by several dozen scientists, including four from federal health agencies.

The compound, bisphenol A (BPA), is one of the most-produced chemicals in the world, and almost everyone has traces of it -- or more -- in their bodies.

Another Myth Exploded - Dieting Does Not Work

UCLA researchers report that diets generally do not help people lose weight and keep it off. In general, people initially lose 5 percent to 10 percent of their weight on any given of diets, but then gain it back, often with some additional pounds as well.

The information is the result of a comprehensive and rigorous analysis of 31 long-term diet studies.

The researchers concluded that most people would be better off not going on a diet at all.

A new study uncovered another contributing factor to the rising childhood obesity rates: The amount of added sugars in your child's diet. The well-being of preschoolers is being seriously compromised as those who consumed higher amounts of added sugars in their diets were reported to receive less calories from healthy food sources such as those rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. This means the more added sugars from sodas and sweets in kids' diets, the fewer the number of good nutrients their bodies get in order to remain healthy.
